High Commission of India Celebrated World Bicyle Day on June 2nd, 2019  

On the occasion of World Bicycle Day, and to commemorate 150th birth anniversary year of Mahatma Gandhi, a ‘Bicycle Race and Rally’ was organised by the High Commission of India in Seychelles on Sunday, June 2nd 2019 from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM in Victoria.

The event began with a small speech by the Acting High Commissioner Shri Ashwin Bhaskaran where he talked about Mahatma Gandhi’s love for cycling and walking and his role in promoting sustainable transport in India and the world. He also extolled the advantages of using Bicyle as a means of transport and talked about the relevance of World Cycle Day.

After this a 50 KM professional cycling race was organised which passed via important landmarks of the city like Clock Tower and Palais de Sport roundabout and finished at the Stadium Car Park. More than 25 professional cyclists from 5 different teams including 14 from the National Cycling team of Seychelles participated in the race. It was a very fast paced, enthralling and exciting race in which the fastest team clocked an average speed of more than 46 KMs/Hour. The race was watched by hundreds of live audience and was also broadcasted by the National Broadcaster Seychelles Broadcasting Corporation SBC.

This was followed by a rally by amateur cycling enthusiast in the city in which a large number of Indian Diaspora members participated. At the end prizes and trophies were distributed to various categories of team and individual winners.

The events were organised in partnership with the National Sports Council of Seychelles and National Cycling Association.
