Observance of Rashtriya Ekta Diwas & celebration of 144th Birth Anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Seychelles

PRESS RELEASE

1.To commemorate the 144th birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, 31st October 2019 was observed by the High Commission of India in Seychelles as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas/National Unity Day.  The High Commissioner administered Rashtriya Ekta Diwas pledge to all members of the Mission as well as GOI officials on deputation to Seychelles.   

2.The Mission also organized a public function at 4:30 p.m. in Yoga Hall of the High Commission where Indian expatriates, PIOs and Indian officials were invited.  Floral tributes were paid by garlanding the photograph of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel followed by a audio-visual documentary on the great leader.   The Mission had organized an essay writing competition on “Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel-Iron Man of India” and the prizes to school children of different classes from level I to level XIII in different age categories were given away by the High Commissioner on their winning and participating in the essay competition. 

3.The High Commissioner spoke on the life and achievements of Sardar Patel highlighting the leader’s role in unification of India post-independence and his close association with Gandhi ji and other freedom fighters to fight for India’s independence. During his opening remarks, he  said that Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was an extraordinary and visionary leader, social reformer and thinker, freedom fighter and a staunch Gandhian. Sardar Patel went on to become the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India. He said that Sardar Patyel played a crucial role not only during the freedom Struggle of India but also in the post-Independent political consolidation of India as he was instrumental in the integration of over 500 princely states into the Indian Union. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel is better known as “Iron Man and Bismarck of India”. He also informed that  the Government of India in 2014, to commemorate the great legendary, announced to celebrate  his birthday, 31 October annually as  the Rashtriya Ekta Diwas (National Unity Day).
